If you are interested in LASIK, are over the age of 45 and want to be able to read, you have two choices.  You can either wear reading glasses or have Monovision LASIK.  Most nearsighted patients over the age of 45 don't realize that when their eyes are corrected for distance through LASIK, they will need reading glasses.

As we age, the lens' ability to flex or accomodate is lost and the eyes cannot adjust or focus images at different distances.  This condition, called Presbyopia, is corrected with reading glasses, bifocals or monovision contact lenses.  Today, monovision can also be achieved through laser eye surgery.  Monovision LASIK or blended vision, allows the patient to see near and far without glasses.

When helping you to decide whether monovision LASIK is right for you, we may ask these questions:

  • Do you engage activities that require sharp distance vision?
  • Do you read for long stretches or have a hobby that requires precise near vision?
  • Do you drive extensively at night?
  • Are you very discriminating about the quality of your vision and willing to put up with glasses in order to achieve it?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, monovision may not be the best choice for you. Monovision is ideal for those who are willing to accept a bit of  a compromise in order to be as independent from glasses as possible.  Monovision LASIK has a high success rate.  Typically, 90% of patients who choose monovision, adapt to it and love it.  The patients who do not adapt may opt for a touch up LASIK procedure to "undo" the monovision.  We will help you determine which form of vision correction will best reach your goals.
